Macrina

Macrina was twelve years old when her family arrainged her marriage, but when the groom to be unexpectedly died, Macrina vowed to live a celebate life and devote herself to contemplation. Macrina's father sent her brother Basil to study with the best educator hoping he would become a lawyer and orator. When he had completed his studied, Basil returned home puffed up with his own wisdom. He was offered a job teaching rhetoric, but macrina stepped in, told his he was acting like he was better than everyone else, and that he would be better off quoting fewer pagan authors and following the advice of Christian ones. Basil ignored her.
Basil and macrina's brother, Naucratius, whom Basil was close to, died unexpectedly, and Basil changed his life around. He resigned his teaching position and asked Macrina to teach him the secrets of religious life. Macrina soon got her family to leave their home and life much like the ascetics in the desert. On Macrina's advice Basil went to Egypt to leard more about the monastic life.
Basil eventually became the greatest teacher of monasticism in the Greek speaking church, and since it was Macrina who got his interested in it, we can say that she was the founder of Greek monasticism

Reflections on Hilda and Tekakwitha

Several weeks ago I watched a news segment about women executives in the Chicago area. Only one women was the CEO of a large corporation, and only a handful were on decision making boards. Yet, Hilda of Whitby's life proves that women are needed in influencial positions, and they can be the best leaders in a variety of situations. Hilda founded several monasteries including a double one for both men and women, and she was the governor of both groups. Hilda answered directly to the Pope showing the great respect she commanded from those around her. Her double monastary in Whitby was the site of the Synod of 664 where the debate over the date of Easter was forever decided. It was Hilda's moderating and negotiating skills that directed the synod to a peaceful resolution. Kings as well as regular citizens came to Hilda for advise, and she promoted the study of Scripture and education for the clergy. Hilda is an example all women can emulate as they work toward their goals.

Tekakwitha was born into a Mohawk Iroquois tribe during a time when women were considered of little worth in her culture. Yet, in her short life she became a symbol of reconciliation emerging from the collision of economic, cultural, and political forces that forged a new nation in the wilderness. Her gentleness, kindness, and Christian principles proved influencial as five rivaling tribes made peace with each other and united. Tekakwitha is an example of the power of inclusivity; she shows us that differences in culture and beliefs are not a treat to the unity of the Church, but they are gifts of the Spirit. All people and cultures bring new insights into understanding the Gospel.

Julian and sin

see my comment below

For Julian the central religious question is why did God not prevent sin? Holy Church teaches that we are all sinners before a rathful God, and some people are so irredeemably ainful they will be comdemned to eternal suffering. In her vision Jesus teaches Julian that sin is necessary, "but all will be well, and evey kind of thing will be well." (Julian of Norwich, "Showings", p.225). In Julian's theology everything is a matter of perspective; what we know depends on our way of perceiving reality. She interpreted a new way to understand sin and salvation, and in so she finds a gracious God. In her vision Julian comes to understand what Jesus meant when he taught her all would be well.

Julian believed that humans sin out of naivete and ignorance. "And the cause is blindness, because he does not see God, for if he saw God continually, he would have no harmful feeling nor any kind of prompting, no sorrowing which is conducive to sin." (Ibid. p. 260). Julian said sin was not a substance, but a constriction of a perspective of God. Sin does not rise out of our wickedness, and our mistakes bring us self-knowledge and a seeking for God. God is not wrathful; he does not blame us for our sins. Wrath is a human weakness that we project on God. Salvation is turning to God and learning from our sins, and even if we do not understand how, everything will be well in the end. Grace makes God pleasing to us. When one understands this from the correct perspective he or she realizes that there is no cause for anxiety.

Summary: Hildegard of Bingen was one of the most remarkable women of the Middle Ages--an abbess and woman of God, a visionary, naturalist, playwright, mystic, political moralist and composer. Yet, despite her outpouring of religious creativity, her visions were called into question, and she was put on trial by the Church in 1148. This is the story of the events leading up to that trial and of the trial itself.
